Bali Lempuyang Temple | Our religious Journey
Its was on Saturday , 10th June . One day after full moon , in Hindu full moon is one of our special day for worshiping God on his different manifestation. Almost every member of the family will put their offering around or going to the nearest temple . This is our first religious journey to Bali Lempuyang Temple and the second time for my wife . Bali Lempuyang Temple is the oldest temple in Bali . Dedicated to Lord Iswara and also the main place to worship the ancestor most of Balinese peoples .
Now I am almost 35 years old and have never been there . As a Balinese , going the the Temple for doing the ceremony ritual is a part of our life . Not only in our family temple but I’ve been almost every main temple around Bali island . Also our main family clan Temple . I am still a part of my big family in the east and have never fail to comeback home if there’s a temple ceremony in our Big family temple . We are no longer living in the east . For continue the living my grandfather was migrated to west after the volcano eruption and destroyed most of the village in the east .
We stop in some Temple along the way to Lempuyang Temple . Praying to God and ask permit for save journey to the Temple .
Yes , its a shame that I’ve never been here , until someone told me its so important to visit this Temple and do offering here as a Hindu Bali at least once in 10 years . Here is actually the Bali development begun , here where Rsi Markandya or also known as Danghyang Gni Jaya with his 1000 followers live and start teaching a Hindu concept all around the Island . As I was born from one of Pasek clan family , the biggest clan in Bali island . Our Ancestor was living here and as his generation have to remember it . By doing the religious Journey to this place , we know and would appreciate with what our ancestor have done in the past that making Bali island like now .

Some pictures that we took before we praying in the first temple . Penataran Agung temple , its located in the lowest part from all thus 6 Temples above us .
We choose not during full moon to do our religious journey to Bali Lempuyang Temple . Still a good day but less crowd instead during the full moon . We leave our house a little bit early , around 7 am in order to get there earlier . We did some preparation especially prepare our offering . A quite simple offering call ” Pejati ” . Pejati is a kind of offering to express our sincerity .
Bali Lempuyang Temple is located in the east Bali , is a complex temple lies on the the hill call Puncak Gumang . There are 7 temples from the slope until to the peak of the hill . First temple after the parking is the biggest and built in the lowest part of the hill . Pura Penataran Agung , the biggest and the most beautiful setting and architecture .
Second Temple is Telaga Manik Mas Temple , about 1 kilometre from Penataran Agung Temple . To get here we can hire motorbike taxi from the villager which is cost only 10k Rupiah . Telaga also mean the water source or spring water that we believe as a holly water . Here we do offering ask for blessing and strength , wishing we able to climb the hill to reach the temple on the top of the hill .

So this was the starting place for real adventurer to reach the peak of the hill which is about 1.200 meters . About 1.800 stairs and we start climbing . It was only me and my wife , there are also some of the prayer in a different groups . After almost 600 meters we climb through the stairs than we arrive at Lempuyang Madya . There is another temple here just before the Lempuyang Madya temple . This temple is Pura Telaga Sawang , also another temple water source temple .
My Trip is my Adventure
Lempuyang Madya is a main temple to worship the ancestor of one of the biggest clan in Bali , Pasek clan . Its also written on the inscription that Bali peoples must not forget where they coming from , who they are and at least in every 10 years have to come here to worship the God on his manifestation in Lempuyang Temple also to our ancestor .
This pictures we took when we arrive on the peak of the hill . Pasar Agung Temple . Cold and misty atmosphere , we couldn’t see the view of the land bellow . We are about 1200 meters above sea level . But not yet reach the highest part where the last temple of Lempuyang Temple complex .

After done with our offering ritual at Lempuyang Madya Temple than we continue to reach to the peak of the hill . From Lempuyang Madya Temple we will need to defeat the stairs up to the hill around 1500 meters . There will be another 3 Temples including the Lempuyang Luhur such as Puncak Bisbis Temple , Pasar Agung Temple and to the peak is Lempuyang Luhur Temple . We take around 1,5 hours climbing through the well maintain stairs which is also with the stairs is already set up with railing . This was pretty hard part during the hiking , but we have to make it .
Finally we reach here , defeat 1400 stairs up to the hill for almost 3 hours journey with some stop in each Temple along the way . We are so happy , especially me to get here for the first time . Here we did an offering , to worship the God lead by the monk from the village bellow of the hill .
Once we reach back in the bottom of the stairs , we feel like can’t continue walking to get into our car . So we take motorbike taxi offered by the local villager . We need to pay just 10.000 rupiah per drop off . By the way from the peak of the hill we walk down the stairs after done all the ritual and was need approximately 1,5 hours .
Thank for reading my article . I ‘m so happy that I’m still have chance to do what our ancestor said which is written on the Bali inscription . Tears coming out from my eyes when I’m writing this blog . I was born in a small poor farmer family , my parents was struggling in life to survive to give us a good living . We were lack of knowledge and we almost forget in this life , no one told me before about what is written in the inscription about this Temple . The place where my ancestor live and built the foundation of our great culture in Bali Island .
Best regards
